What to Pack For Ireland – a Lucky Packing Guide

What to Pack For Ireland – a Lucky Packing Guide

Packing for Ireland is not easy due to the unpredictable weather. You can start your day with sunshine and end in rain. Or it could rain on you ALL DAY LONG. So with the weather so unpredictable, you might ask yourself, “what do I pack for Ireland?” or “what do I wear in Ireland?”. The simple answer, light layers, and rain boots. In our seven days in Ireland, we only experienced two full days of rain. Other than that, we had pretty decent weather when we visited during the spring. The clouds hung low during the mornings and the sky cleared with sunshine by noon. Speaking of spring, that is one of the best times to visit Ireland as the weather is nice, flowers are blooming and there are fewer tourists.

So without further ado, here is my “lucky” guide when packing for Ireland. Whether you are visiting for three days, a week or longer, this guide will have you well prepared to face anything – even a leprechaun.

Ireland is a stunning country. The landscapes will take your breathe away in Galway County.

What to Wear for Ireland

You are going to want to wear light layers when you visit Ireland. The highest temperatures of the year only get to 70°F, whereas the lowest temperatures are as cold as 40°F. When you are visiting the coastlines of Ireland, such as the famous Cliffs of Moher or Giants Causeway, the weather changes drastically. The winds can pick up so much, you just might blow away. Furthermore, it is also a lot colder than being inland. So here is my list of what to wear for Ireland whether it is cold, warm or raining.

Jackets

Rain Jacket

I cannot express enough how vital it is to pack a rain jacket for Ireland. Hence why it is the first item on my list. No matter what time of the year you visit Ireland, you will most likely come across rain. So pack a light rain jacket.

Tri-climate Jacket

We are big fans of tri-climate jackets. They keep us warm when it is freezing, windy or just slightly cold. A tri-climate jacket is a perfect jacket to wear in Ireland because it can be used for almost any type of weather. And as I have stated before, the weather in Ireland is constantly unpredictable. So in addition to a rain jacket, a tri-climate jacket is all you need to pack.

Casual Attire

Dress

Ladies, I always recommend packing a nice dress for any trip. You just never know when you might need one. I used one on a few occasions during my trip to Ireland. I wore a dress for our luxurious afternoon tea and during a fine dining dinner. And don’t forget to spice up your outfit with a great pair of heels and stunning jewelry.

Button-down Shirt

Gentlemen, always pack a button down shirt. I believe good things happen when you dress for success, especially in the land of the Irish. A button-down shirt is perfect for a night at the pubs, a delicious dinner or a delightful afternoon tea. You can wear your shirt with either jeans or a nice pair of khaki pants.

Pants

Hiking Pants

Whether you plan to go hiking in Ireland or not, packing one pair of hiking pants is a safe bet because the grass can get really muddy in some areas of Ireland. Especially when you want to explore some medieval castles and ruins. My go-to pair of hiking pants are The North Face Women’s Aphrodite 2.0 Pant, whereas Adam’s are The North Face Men’s Paramount Trail Convertible Pants.

Jeans

You can never go wrong packing jeans for Ireland. In fact, I recommend packing at least two pairs if you are planning a 7 day or more trip. You can wear them around town during the day or night, for tours and dinner. In addition, they will always provide some warmth during the constant cold weather.

Do not forget your best walking shoes when you pack for Ireland. Not all the roads are paved like the Dark Hedges aka Kings Road.

Shoes

Hiking Shoes

Ireland is full of beautiful places to hike, so if you are an avid nature lover or hiker, a pair of hiking boots is essential to wear in Ireland. Furthermore, just like the hiking pants, it is also a good idea to pack a light pair of hiking boots for the common, muddy terrain. Or if you plan to enjoy some outdoor activities at a resort or castle hotel.

Sneakers

Everyday sneakers should definitely be packed for Ireland. The cobblestone roads are not easy to walk in, so comfortable sneakers are recommended. As a woman, I definitely enjoy comfortable and stylish walking shoes for traveling. So the shoes my sister and I both love are the Adidas Cloudfoam Advantage Clean Sneaker. In addition to looking stylish and clean, they also have cloudfoam cushion. So no matter how long we walk, our feet feel like they are always walking on clouds.

Rain Boots

Rain boots are definitely a priority when packing for Ireland. In fact, in the seven days we were in Ireland, I needed my rain boots every single day. You will not need to wear them all day, every day, but you will certainly need them at some point of the day. My favorite rain boots are Hunter Boots. They are not only stylish, but they are also extremely comfortable (and I tried on a lot of different brands).

Accessories

Beanie

As briefly mentioned, it can get as low as 40°F and even colder when you are on the coast. We found the Cliffs of Moher to be very cold and windy during the spring. So I highly recommend packing a beanie if you are visiting Ireland from October through April.

Gloves

Just like the beanie, gloves are also a great item to pack for Ireland. We mostly wore gloves during the cold morning and nights walking through the towns.

What to Pack for Ireland – the Essentials

No trip is complete without packing the essentials.

Enjoying the views along the Ring of Kerry. This route is essential for any road trip in Ireland.

Global Mobile Hotspot – Wi-Fi Device

If you plan to take a road trip in Ireland (which I highly recommend), then packing a global mobile hotspot (wireless Wi-Fi device) is essential. It works as a two-for-one package serving as not only a Wi-Fi device, but also a GPS. Having a mobile hotspot as your GPS while driving in Ireland is extremely helpful when navigating in the remote places of the Emerald Isle. Furthermore, a mobile hotspot is preferred if your cell provider does not have free international texting and data – because let us be honest, we all love our social media and want to post about “Our Sweet Adventures”.

Umbrella

As stated many times, it rains a lot in Ireland. So in addition to a rain jacket and boots, an umbrella should also be packed for your trip to Ireland. A rain jacket and boots can only help so much when it is pouring down rain in Ireland.

Camera

Trust me, you will want to capture every castle, scenic landscape and cobblestone road during your Ireland trip. So bring a camera! The best camera on the market right now is a mirrorless camera, specifically the Sony Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera. It is light, fast and takes high-quality photos. Trust me, you will not miss a beat with this camera.

Travel Converter and Adapter

One of the most essential items you must pack for Ireland is a travel converter and adapter. If you live outside of Europe, a travel adapter to convert outlets is not enough to charge and use your electronics properly. You also need a travel converter to convert the voltage to the correct power for your electronic items. Otherwise, you risk blowing a fuse and permanently damaging your electronics.

Power Bank

A power bank has been our savior multiple times. We pack it for any trip we take and I highly recommend you pack one for Ireland. The RAVPower 22000mAh Power Bank can charge an iPhone X 4.9 times and a Galaxy S8 4.4 times. Furthermore, it can charge up to three devices simultaneously. We have this one and highly recommend it.

Daypack

Another essential item to pack for Ireland is a daypack. Today, daypacks are more popular than ever. There are tech savvy, anti-theft, and high designer fashion brands to choose from, so everyone can find one that fits their needs and look fashionable. A daypack is perfect for Ireland because it can hold everything you need – umbrella, camera, power bank, rain jacket and more.

I hope you were able to find everything you need to help prepare and pack for Ireland. Everything listed above helped us for our 7-day trip, so I know this lucky packing guide for Ireland can help you too!
