Things to Do in Port Arthur
From scenic parks to wildlife encounters and fresh Gulf seafood, Port Arthur offers a range of activities for families and outdoor enthusiasts. Here are some of the best things to do in Port Arthur during your visit.
Sun, Sand, and Sea Rim

Port Arthur is home to one of the best Texas state parks—Sea Rim State Park, where sandy beaches meet quiet marshlands. This unique coastal park offers the best of both the Gulf and the wetlands, making it the perfect spot for an epic day outdoors.
Paddle through the calm marshes on a kayak trail, stroll along the boardwalk nature trail, go birdwatching for hundreds of species that pass through the area, or beachcomb for seashells along the two miles of natural shoreline—a favorite activity for my kids.

Speaking of kids, families will love the Junior Ranger Program, where little adventurers can learn about wildlife and earn fun badges. Sea Rim also hosts hands-on programs, such as watercolor painting, recycling scavenger hunts, and more.
Anglers can also spend a peaceful day at the park, trying their luck fishing or crabbing right off the beach or in the nearby marshes.
Spot Gators with Captain Eli

Embark on a thrilling adventure with Captain Eli and venture deep into the wetlands to search for alligators. Don’t worry! Despite what you might find lurking in the water, Captain Eli’s tours are completely family-friendly and fun for all ages.
As you cruise through the bayous and cypress-lined waterways, you’ll learn fascinating facts about the local ecosystem and the wildlife that call it home. Keep your eyes peeled for alligators gliding through the water, bald eagles soaring overhead, and egrets wading gracefully in the shallows.
The combination of breathtaking scenery and Captain Eli’s local knowledge makes this one of the most memorable experiences in Port Arthur. And for those feeling extra adventurous, Captain Eli also offers a creepy night tour, where you’ll search for gators after dark.
Go Fishing on the Gulf

If you love to fish (or have always wanted to try, like us), Port Arthur is the perfect place to cast a line. It’s one of the best fishing spots in Texas, whether you’re an experienced angler or a beginner ready to catch your first fish.
For the ultimate experience, book a guided inshore fishing trip with one of Port Arthur’s local charters. The captains know all the best spots to reel in redfish, speckled trout, and flounder, and they’ll make sure you have a fun, stress-free day on the water.

A local favorite is Pleasure Island, where you’ll find fishing piers and shoreline access that are great for both serious and casual anglers. It’s the perfect place to spend a quiet morning or watch the sunset as you wait for your next bite.
You can also fish at Sea Rim State Park, where visitors can cast right from the shore or nearby marshes. It’s ideal for first-timers because you don’t need a fishing license, and the park even offers a loaner program. Just bring your own bait. The rangers will provide the rest. It’s an easy and family-friendly way to try fishing on the Gulf.
Play Bird BINGO!

If you love spotting wildlife, bring your binoculars to Port Arthur. The coastal city is the first land many birds reach on their spring migration.
As part of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, Port Arthur is one of the best birding destinations in Texas. Whether you’re visiting specifically for birding or just exploring the area, you’re bound to see countless bird species everywhere.
To make birding even more fun, grab a Birding Bingo card from the Port Arthur Visitor Center or Sea Rim State Park. It’s a great way to keep kids (and adults) engaged while exploring the city. Our kids loved finding birds for our bingo card, and we were so close to getting bingo—maybe you will!
Start your birding adventure at McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge, a beautiful stretch of coastal marsh. Refuges provide a safe place for birds to nest, rest, feed, and breed, making them. You may spot bald eagles, spoonbills, condors, and puffins as they frequently make the refuge home.

Just next door to the refuge is Sea Rim State Park, where you can walk the nature boardwalk trail or paddle through the marshes for an up-close look at coastal birds in their natural habitat.
Following Sea Rim State Park, venture over to Sabine Woods—a peaceful sanctuary that’s a favorite stop for birders from around the world. This quiet, wooded preserve is one of the most important birding habitats on the Upper Texas Coast. Bring your binoculars and keep an eye out for warblers, tanagers, orioles, and grosbeaks flitting through the trees.
Another favorite birding spot in Port Arthur is the bird blind on Pleasure Island. It’s a peaceful place to sit back, relax, and watch migratory birds without ever leaving the shade. Just be sure to pack plenty of bug repellent, as mosquitoes are everywhere.
Play on Pleasure Island

Pleasure Island is one of the best places in Port Arthur to spend a relaxing day outdoors, offering a mix of fishing, birding, and family fun on a beautiful stretch of land between Sabine Lake and the Intracoastal Waterway.
If you’re visiting with kids, the drive to the man-made island alone is an adventure. My boys loved crossing the bridge and watching the massive cargo ships pass by.
The main attraction for families is the Pleasure Island Pirate Ship Playground. This epic playground is a giant pirate ship, complete with slides, climbing areas, and lookout decks. There’s also a smaller ship plays cape for children under five. So kids of all ages can have fun burning off some energy!
For anglers, Walter Umphrey Park, Pleasure Island Pier, and the Sabine Jetties are a few of the most popular spots to reel in redfish, trout, and flounder. If you need bait or tackle, stop by Causeway Bait, Tackle & Grill or one of the local bait shops in Port Arthur before heading out.

You’ll spot plenty of egrets, pelicans, and laughing gulls all day long, but if you really want to be surrounded by feathered friends, head to the Pleasure Island Bird Blind. The blind overlooks a peaceful pond where herons and migratory birds love to gather.
The island is also perfect for a scenic stroll. There are lovely boardwalks along the waterfront that are great for spotting birds, catching a sunset, or simply enjoying the coastal breeze—and if you’re lucky, you might even see dolphins swimming by.
Visit the Museum of the Gulf Coast

If you’re looking for something fun and educational, make sure to stop by the Museum of the Gulf Coast. This kid-friendly museum is full of hands-on exhibits, including a dig box and interactive touch displays that make learning about the region’s history exciting for all ages.
The museum spans two floors packed with fascinating exhibits about Port Arthur, the Gulf Coast, and the surrounding areas. You never know what knowledge you’ll walk away with—I was surprised to learn how many famous musicians and athletes were born right here in Port Arthur.
You can explore exhibits dedicated to rock legend Janis Joplin, who grew up in Port Arthur, as well as a gallery honoring one of the greatest NFL coaches of all time, Jimmy Johnson.
There are also displays celebrating the region’s maritime history, wildlife, and local art, giving visitors a true sense of what makes the Gulf Coast so unique.
Bowl a Strike!

Trade the outdoor adventures for an evening indoors filled with a little friendly competition. Max Bowl is a go-to spot for family fun in Port Arthur, offering bowling, arcade games, laser tag, good food, and cold beer all under one roof.
Put the bumpers up and grab a bowling ramp for the kids so everyone can join in on the fun. When you’re ready for a break, head to the arcade to play games, rack up tickets, and win cool prizes.
If you’re still up for more action, laser tag is always a hit with both kids and parents. It’s a great place to spend a few hours, relax indoors, and enjoy a little friendly fun after a day of exploring Port Arthur.

Rao’s Bakery

Start your morning at Rao’s Bakery, a beloved Gulf Coast favorite that’s been serving sweet treats since 1941. This cozy café is perfect for grabbing breakfast or an afternoon pick-me-up with their homemade gelato, specialty coffees, and freshly baked pastries.
If the coffee doesn’t wake you up, the pastry case will. It’s filled with jaw-dropping cakes, muffins, colorful cookies, cinnamon rolls, and traditional Italian pastries. My kids were literally like kids in a candy shop (except the candy was cake!).
Must order: Pistachio Affogato, Cinnamon Rolls, and a Bacon, Egg & Cheese Croissant.
Tía Juanitas Fish Camp

No trip to Port Arthur is complete without a stop at Tía Juanita’s Fish Camp. This lively local spot blends Cajun flavors with a Tex-Mex twist, serving up some of the best seafood dishes on the Gulf Coast. From the moment you walk in, the upbeat music, colorful decor, and smell of grilled seafood set the tone for a good time.
The high-energy atmosphere makes it perfect for families, and on weekends, it gets turned up a notch with live music filling the dining room. My kids loved it so much that they couldn’t help but dance along, creating their own little dance floor, and had everyone smiling.
Must order: Boudin Balls, Char Grilled Oysters, Blackened Gator Tacos, Blackened Redfish Pontchartrain, BBQ Crabs, and Crawfish Boil (when in season).
Neches River Wheelhouse

For great food with a view, head to Neches River Wheelhouse, one of Port Arthur’s favorite waterfront restaurants. Located right on the river, you can watch ships pass by while enjoying fresh seafood, juicy burgers, and Cajun favorites made with local flair.
The open-air patio and colorful beach-style bar lend the place a laid-back, coastal vibe that perfectly fits Port Arthur’s easygoing spirit. It’s a hit with families, too. The kids’ meals are served on frisbee plates, so when they’re done eating, they can head to the big grassy field next to the patio and toss their new toy while the adults relax and enjoy their meal.
Must order: Pistolettes, Seafood Nachos, Shrimp & Grits, and Cajun Red Snapper.
