Fun Facts of the Wineries in Fredericksburg, Texas

While we were visiting the best wineries in Fredericksburg, we learned so much about Texas wine and Fredericksburg’s significant role. The wineries in Fredericksburg are located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. Moreover, this wine region spans at least 9 million acres, making it the second-largest wine region in the nation!

Some of the most popular and well-known grapes grown in Texas include Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, and Viognier. (Fun fact: we first had Viognier wine when visiting wineries in Charlottesville, Virginia.)

With that said, though the Texas Hill Country is the largest wine region in Texas, 80% of the grapes are actually grown in the Texas High Plains near Lubbock. So most wineries in Fredericksburg will grow their own vineyards on-site, in addition to receiving a majority of grapes from the Texas High Plains.

Where to Stay During your Wine Getaway in Fredericksburg

When you are visiting the wineries in Fredericksburg, I highly recommend you stay overnight. Particularly, stay at the beautiful villas at Barons Creek Vineyards. Though you may be in the Texas Hill Country, these villas will make you feel like you are in Tuscany.

The interior of the villas is as exquisite as the exterior. We love staying in luxury boutique hotels, and the villas at Barons Creek Vineyards are exactly that – absolutely luxurious!

Guests have two options when staying here. You can stay in a guest room on the lower level or a master suite on the upper level. Whether you stay in a guest room or master suite, all guests receive a complimentary sunset champagne toast in the winery tower. We stayed in a guest room, and it was everything we needed and more.

A bottle of sparkling wine being poured into two glasses from one of the best wineries in Fredericksburg, Barons Creek Vineyard.

The guest room could have fooled us for a master suite because it is so spacious! The bedroom has a king-sized bed with a huge closet, a flat-screen TV with cable service, a marble top mini-bar with a fridge, a microwave, and an in-room Keirug coffee machine.

The bathroom is almost as big as the bedroom! It has a double sink, a walk-in shower with a bench, a comfortable bathrobe, and a water closet. Moreover, there is a relaxing patio with outdoor furniture to enjoy a glass of wine. The villa also provides free WiFi which is very valuable in the Texas Hill Country – seeing as we never had cell service.

Needless to say, the villas at Barons Creek Vineyards is the perfect and most luxurious place to stay for your getaway in Fredericksburg. If you are ready to book your stay here, contact Marta Chase at 512-845-2130 or marta.chase@baronscreekvineyards.com to inquire about reservations and daily rates.

Best Wineries in Fredericksburg, Texas

One of the best things to do in Fredericksburg is to visit all the award-winning wineries. With over 50 wineries, it is almost impossible to decide which ones to visit. Especially if its your first time in Fredericksburg.

Hopefully, you will find my guide on the best wineries in Fredericksburg helpful in planning your trip and deciding which wineries to visit. I recommend visiting 2 – 3 a day to make the most of each winery.

I also recommend experiencing a winery in different ways. Thus, doing a wine tour at one winery, a wine tasting at another winery, and then relaxing with a bottle of wine and enjoying the ambience at your final winery. This will give you a great taste of Fredericksburg wineries (no pun intended).

Before I share my guide on the best wineries in Fredericksburg, please remember to drink responsibly. If you plan to do a lot of winery hopping, I recommend having a designated driver. Or you can book a wine tour or a wine shuttle – two of the most popular choices to visit several different wineries in Fredericksburg with ease.

Please note, all of these wineries are some of the best in Fredericksburg and are listed in alphabetical order.

Barons Creek Vineyards

Barons Creek Vineyards is one of the newest wineries in Fredericksburg, Texas. In 2015, the winery opened to the public and, in 2019, began harvesting their grapes for production. Currently, Barons Creek Vineyards receives most of its grapes from Texas and Washington, California, and Spain.

The winemaker will transfer all of their Texas grape-based wines from oak barrels and finish them in steel barrels. This technique definitely works because every Texas wine we tasted was fantastic!

A bottle of Barons Creek Vineyards BOOTS red wine with a glass of red wine on the right.

While the wine is spectacular at Barons Creek Vineyards, it is one of the best wineries in Fredericksburg because of its atmosphere. The entire property is gorgeous, with at least five different areas to enjoy their wine.

The inside of their main tasting room has high ceilings, a center island bar, and two additional bars on both ends of the room. In addition, there are also four more areas to enjoy your wine. Guests can gather in the barrel and tank rooms, at the overlook tower, or the pavilion. Your options to drink wine at Barons Creek Vineyards are almost endless.

In addition to wine, Barons Creek Vineyards has a small cheese and charcuterie for purchase to pair with your wine. You can savor your wine and snacks inside the tasting room, but I recommend going outside to take in the beautiful outdoor scenery.

As I mentioned before, Barons Creek Vineyards is one of the best wineries in Fredericksburg because of its entire atmosphere. Outside the main tasting room is a fire pit and a gorgeous fountain to gather around. No wonder why Barons Creek Vineyards is also known as a premier wedding destination. To top it off, there is live music outside on Saturdays to complete the ambiance.

Known For: Their European-villa flare, overlook wine tower, luxurious villas to stay in, and award-winning red wines.

Our Favorite Wines: their new release – Boots, Gold Medal 2017 Campeon, 2018 Sauvignon Blanc, and 2018 Rose.

Becker Vineyards

Becker Vineyards is not only one of the best wineries in Fredericksburg, but it is also one of the oldest. It all started back in 1990 when the Beckers purchased the estate. What was once a barn is now an award-winning winery. As soon as you lay eyes on the barn, you can immediately notice it has a Texas-German ambiance reflecting the history of Fredericksburg.

The tasting room is breathtaking with wooden accents from floor to ceiling. Moreover, the entire estate is comprised of a 10,000 square foot winery with a tasting room, an underground wine cellar, 56 acres of vineyards, a lavender farm, a reception hall to hold special events, an outdoor verandah and pavilion, an 1890’s homestead log cabin, and more.

Rows of lavender in the front with rows of vineyards in the back.

In addition to a beautiful estate, the wine at Becker Vineyards is phenomenal. The winery produces a large variety of different types of wine. From dry white wine to sweet white wine, dry rose, and an array of red wine.

One reason why Becker Vineyards is one of the best wineries in Fredericksburg is that they are 100% Texas grapes! They produce 10% of their grapes on the property and receive an additional 10% in West Texas and the rest of the grapes come from the Texas High Plains. In fact, Becker Vineyards is the largest purchaser of grapes in the Texas High Plains. Another significant component of Becker Vineyards wines is being the first winery to introduce Viognier to Texas.

Several different wine bottles from Becker Vineyards lined up.

When you visit Becker Vineyards, make sure you enjoy their complimentary winery tour. The tour is offered every weekend starting at 11:30 am and every hour after until 4:30 pm. During the tour, you get an inside look at their barrel room, tank room, underground cellar, and more.

In our opinion the underground cellar also referred to as the library, is one of the most unique aspects of Becker Vineyards. It is not only a beautiful underground cellar but also the home of their exclusive wine experience.

Guests can enjoy a wine tasting of Becker Vineyards reserved wines with a cheese pairing at the long wooden table. Also available on the weekends is live music at the pavilion and a food truck!

Lastly, I highly recommend you visit Becker Vineyards before 2 pm because as one of the best wineries in Fredericksburg, it gets VERY crowded in the afternoon.

An underground cellar at Becker Vineyards with a long wooden table.

Known For: being one of the first wineries in Fredericksburg, one of the largest and most beautiful estates, and lavender field.

Our Favorite Wines: ’17 Ranger Hays (flagship red wine), ’17 Cabernet Franc Reserve, ’15 Roussanne Reserve, ’15 Dry Reisling, and a sweet ’16 Fleur Sauvage

The regular tasting offers guests the opportunity to choose six different wines on the wine list for $20. The reserve library tasting is offered one Saturday a month and includes a behind the scenes wine tour and a reserve wine tasting with a cheese pairing for $60. The Art of Food & Wine is only available Friday through Sunday where guests get to go on a gastronomy and enology journey. The tasting includes five different wines paired with hors d’oeuvre created by Chef Michael Lockhart for $35.

Fat Ass Ranch and Winery

The name says it all – Fat Ass Ranch and Winery is a fun and out of the “ordinary” winery experience. Which is exactly why we think they are one of the best wineries in Fredericksburg!

They have NO rules with their wines. In fact, we were recommended to use a variety of their wines as a marinade for seafood, as a mixer for drinks, and more.

Fat Ass Ranch and Winery started when owners, Gail and Jennie McCulloch, realized their donkey was as big as their horses. It was then that they realized they lived on a Fat Ass Ranch. After further thinking, they decided to start a winery to cater to anyone’s taste buds and the rest is history.

A wine glass with a donkey logo from Fat Ass Ranch and Winery with a ranch in the background.

Guests might come to Fat Ass Ranch and Winery for the famous peach wine or frozen sangrias, but they definitely stay to have a good time. Which is exactly the goal the McCulloch’s want to achieve! They want all of their guests to feel welcome and relaxed with no judgment on the type of wine they enjoy.

Fat Ass Ranch and Winery is known for its sweet wines, but they also have some terrific dry red wine. So whether you enjoy a dry red or sweet and fruity wine, Fat Ass Ranch and Winery is truly the perfect winery for anyone – especially for guests beginning their wine journey.

The moment you step foot on the property, you can feel the fun Texas ranch atmosphere. From the horseshoe pits to the silos, wooden fences, and pickup truck benches – everything fits the theme of the winery perfectly.

On Saturdays, it is a real party here too. They have live music and food trucks for everyone to enjoy. Moreover, they also run a tour that drives you through the small vineyard to their sister property, The Wine Garage. The tour includes wine tastings at both wineries and the famous frozen sangrias.

Known For: sweet and delicious fruit-forward wines, frozen sangrias, being more fun and out of the box than other wineries.

Our Favorite Wines: of course, the Peach Wine, Strawberry Fields, and Texas Red.

Tasting Price: the tasting menu changes throughout the year based on the season. It includes five different wines and a complimentary wine glass for $10.

Dining Options: a different food truck every Saturday afternoon

Fiesta Winery

Two years ago I visited Fiesta Winery for my girls getaway and we all shared a bottle of Skinny Dippin. Since that day, I have longed for more!

I am not the only one who feels this way. Fiesta Winery has been a longtime fan-favorite to wine enthusiasts in Fredericksburg, Texas for several years. Needless to say, it is definitely one of the best wineries in Fredericksburg.

A wine bottle of Fiesta Winery Skinny Dippin on the left and a chair and sign that says pink and silver on the wall.

Fiesta Winery is a family-owned and operated business from the Baxter family. The entire family is heavily involved with the winery. From designing the labels to being the master winemaker.

The winery production and vineyard are all located in Bend, Texas – home of the Baxter Ranch that has been in the family for six generations. The 12-acre vineyard produces several different grape varietals to make Fiesta Winery a 100% Texas winery.

As you can see, Fiesta Winery has a large variety of grapes because they produce an array of different wines. Though they are known for both of their sweet red and white wines, Fiesta Winery also produces fantastic dry reds and whites, rose, sparkling, and dessert wines.

Furthermore, I love Fiesta Winery because of its atmosphere. They have one of the most beautiful outdoor seating areas with several trees providing shade and tranquility. Fiesta Winery is the perfect gathering place to sit back and relax with your closest friends or loved ones.

Time will pass by because the atmosphere is so warm and welcoming. Plus, you have everything you need here – wine, cheese, charcuterie, hummus, and even live music on Saturdays!

Grape Creek Winery

Grape Creek Winery is one of the best wineries in Fredericksburg and the very FIRST winery in Fredericksburg, Texas. It all started back in 1983 and has grown exponentially throughout the years. The entire estate sits on 100 acres and is full of vineyards.

What makes Grape Creek Winery special is their premier wine club – in fact, 90% of the wine purchased is from their members. Though Grape Creek Winery has a large estate and produces tons of wine, they only sell their wine to guests that visit their properties or are a part of the wine club. This allows the winemakers to focus on their wine, control how much wine they produce, and release new wines when it is absolutely perfect.

A row of vineyards with grapes ready to be picked.

To see exactly what I mean, you should enjoy their winery tour on the tram. Guests get to drive through the vineyards and visit the state-of-the-art winery production complex.

During the tour, you learn the history of the winery, the winemaking process, and more. Then you get to enjoy one of their three wine tastings – red, sweet, or mixed. The tour costs $35 per person.

One more element that makes Grape Creek Winery one of the best wineries in Fredericksburg is their restaurant, Stout’s Trattoria. It is very hard to find wineries with restaurants to dine at, so this is a very special treat.

Stout’s Trattoria serves lunch daily, dinner Friday to Saturday, and brunch on Sunday. More importantly, there is no better way to start your Sunday than with brunch and wine sitting near a beautiful vineyard.

Must order: the Texas Stuffed French Toast and Italian Pesto Panini.

Known For: being the Tuscany of Texas, the first winery in Fredericksburg, exclusive wine member club, and you can only purchase wine at their locations or shipped as a member.

Our Favorite Wines: Cuvee Blanc, Rose of Malbec (and we don’t even like Rose), Cabernet Blanc, and Grand Rouge.

Tasting Price: three different tasting to choose from – all sweet, all red, or mixed. Each tasting consists of 6 wines and includes a complimentary glass for $20.

Dining Options: A delicious lunch Monday through Thursday, dinner Friday to Saturday, and Sunday brunch at their restaurant, Stout’s Trattoria.

Heath Sparkling Wines

If you love a little bubbly in your wine, you MUST visit Heath Sparkling Wines for one of the best wine-tasting experiences in Fredericksburg.

Heath Sparkling Wines is the first winery in Texas dedicated to producing only sparkling wines. Moreover, Heath Sparkling Wines is the “champagne of Texas.” The winemaker uses the traditional champagne method, consisting of a three-year process from the ground to the lips to produce each sparkling wine.

Four wine flutes filled with a small tasting of sparkling wine and a plate of different bites of food.

In addition to being a 100% sparkling wine-only winery, the wine tasting is one of the most immersive experiences you will ever experience. The guided wine tasting comes with four different sparkling wines that are paired with small bites of food.

The small bites of food change seasonally and completely change the taste of the sparkling wines. First, you taste the sparkling wine, and it’s fabulous, but then you take a bite of food, sip the wine again, and the flavor of sparkling wine is elevated.

The wine tasting experience is both wild and incredible. Hands down, one of my favorite wine tasting experiences of my life!

Like its sister property, Grape Creek Vineyards, the only way to enjoy Heath Sparkling Wines is by visiting the winery or being a wine club member. So I highly recommend you visit the winery, enjoy the immersive tasting, and become a wine member. Trust me; you will want to become a wine member after you taste their sparkling wines.

Known For: the first winery in Texas to dedicate to the art of fine sparkling winemaking and its immersive tasting experience.

Our Favorite Wines: Euphoria, Ebullience, and Adoration.

Tasting Price: a handpicked menu of four sparkling wine tastings paired with small bites of food for $25.

Dining Options: the wine tasting comes with delicious bites of food.

Pedernales Cellars

If you are looking for a peaceful, unique, and slightly upscale winery experience, look no further than Pedernales Cellars. A lot of wineries in Fredericksburg can get very crowded and noisy, but Pedernales Cellars is a boutique winery that remains calm because of its scenic views and relaxing atmosphere. Pedernales Cellars is one of the best wineries in Fredericksburg, Texas because of its history, simple elegance in wine, and ambiance.

Two glasses of white wine from Pedernales Cellars clinking together with a beautiful scenery of the Texas Hill Country in the backdrop.

We visited several different wineries during our weekend in Fredericksburg and none had a more simple elegance than Pedernales Cellars. The main tasting room had a standing center island wooden bar with a black marble top. Then a secondary wine bar top is used for the reserve wine tasting.

With that said, the best place to enjoy wine at Pedernales Cellars is the outdoor patio covered by towering oak trees. There is plenty of seating space with tables and chairs on the patio (almost) all facing the panoramic views of the Pedernales River Valley.

In addition, there is more seating in the front yard and a romantic spot under an oak tree with a bench. On the weekends, there is also live music to complete the tone of the relaxing Texas Hill Country ambiance.

The star of the show that sets Pedernales Cellars apart from its peers is the Barrel Tasting and Tour. This special tour only takes place on Saturday at 11 am and 3 pm.

More than likely, Kyle will be your tour guide and he is phenomenal! Kyle literally walks you through the history of Pedernales Cellars as you make your way through the wine production and cellar.

Pedernales Cellars has 18 acres of vineyards. At least 20% of the grapes come from the Pedernales estate and 80% from the Texas High Plains – making this boutique winery 100% Texas grapes! A few of the grapes they grow on the property are Tempranillo, Merlot, Mourvedre, and Touriga.

Two glasses of red wine from Pedernales Cellars clinking together with barrels in the background.

During the Barrel Tasting and Tour, you will get to go inside their cellar which is known to be the largest underground cellar in the entire state of Texas. After the tour, guests will go back into the barrel room in the cellar and try different wine STRAIGHT FROM THE BARREL!

This experience was one of the highlights of our wine weekend and why Pedernales Cellars is one of the best wineries in Fredericksburg. Following the epic wine tasting, you will also receive a cheese and charcuterie plate to enjoy with a glass of wine.

We have had the pleasure to enjoy several different wine tours in the past few years, and this one is truly special. So, if you do any wine tour in Fredericksburg, I highly recommend Pedernales Cellars Barrel Tasting and Tour!

A couple sharing glasses of wine together in the wine cellar at Pedernales Cellars.

Known For: peaceful estate with scenic views of the beautiful Pedernales River Valley, a unique winery tour to taste wine directly from the barrel, and a focus on Spanish influential wine.

Our Favorite Wines: 2016 Tempranillo Reserve, 2016 Family Reserve, and 2016 Texas Albarino.

Tasting Price: as briefly mentioned, Pedernales Cellars is a relaxing but elegant boutique winery, so on Saturdays, it is required to make reservations for their regular wine tasting. This provides a more controlled and intimate winery experience. From Sunday to Monday, you do not need to make reservations. The regular tasting includes six different wines for $20. The reserve tasting includes several different wines from their exclusive list for $40. The Barrel Tasting and Tour includes a tour inside the wine cellar, several wine tastings straight from the barrel, and a cheese and charcuterie plate for $50. All tastings include a complimentary Riedel wine glass.

Dining Options: cheese, charcuterie, and crackers for purchase.

Safari Winery

One of the newest wineries in Fredericksburg is already one of the best in the Texas Hill Country! Most wineries in Fredericksburg focus on European influences, but not Safari Winery – they focus on Chilean and South African wines!

When we went to South Africa, we never had the opportunity to go to Cape Town, so we were thrilled to be able to taste South African wines in the Texas Hill Country. Moreover, “safari” in Swahili translates to “journey”. This translation is a perfect fit because Safari Winery takes its guests on a wonderful journey through wine!

Safari Winery is owned and operated by the Itz family – a family that has been in Fredericksburg since the city was first established. Though they are Texan through and through, Safari Winery brings something completely new to the table by importing all of their wines to Texas! Yes, their winemakers are not just located out of the state, but out of the country.

Safari Winery currently has two winemakers – one in Chile and one in South Africa. Needless to say, Safari Winery is truly bringing authentic South African and Chilean wines to the Texas Hill Country. We LOVE that they are unique and doing something very special for Texas wine enthusiasts.

Another fun element that Safari Winery brings to Fredericksburg, is its breathtaking wine labels. Each wine has a beautiful sunset silhouette of an African animal on a safari.

A row of wine bottle from Safari Winery with trees in the background.

The wines are not the only element that completes this wine journey. In Safari Winery’s back yard, they have planted countless acacia trees.

Acacia trees are an African species that are most commonly known as being the primary source of food for giraffes. So when you step outside, you truly feel like you have escaped Texas and entered an African reserve. On Saturdays, there is also live music to enjoy with the beautiful scenery.

Since Safari Winery is new, the only way to purchase their fabulous wine is by visiting the property in Fredericksburg or becoming a wine club member. Trust us, you are going to want to become a member of Safari Winery club because all of their wines are truly amazing!

Known For: their Chilean and South African wines, a backyard full of acacia trees, and an overall unique experience like no other winery in Fredericksburg.

Our Favorite Wines: 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2017 Carmenere, 2017, Pinotage, and 2018 Safari Sweet Red.

Tasting Price: the wine tasting includes five different wines that you can choose from the menu for $18.

Dining Options: cheese and charcuterie boards for purchase.

Signor Vineyards

Signor Vineyards is easily one of the best wineries in Fredericksburg because of its award-winning wines and its French countryside ambiance. Moreover, the boutique winery brings one of the best wine regions of Oregon to the Texas Hill Country.

What I love most about Signor Vineyards is the property. Though this boutique fifth-generation Texas family vineyard is nestled in the Texas Hill Country, you feel like you have escaped to France.

A woman and man holding and smiling at their baby under a canopy at Signor Vineyards in Fredericksburg, Texas.

Signor Vineyards has an elegant tasting room, outdoor seating amongst the French country gardens canopied with trees and native plants, and farmhouse shopping at Joanna’s Market. This is a winery you want to sit back and relax with several bottles of wine.

The winery has an estate vineyard in Fredericksburg with seven grape varietals but it also has a sister winery in Ashland, Oregon. Therefore, Signor Vineyards has a beautiful selection of wines from Texas and the Rogue Valley in Oregon.

There are two ways to best experience Signor Vineyards. You can open a bottle with gourmet bites under the tree canopies or enjoy an elevated wine tasting. The elevated wine tasting is an hour and a half educational wine experience with the winery’s sommelier. The sommelier guides guests on an in-depth wine tasting and pairing with delectable food bites, explaining the different grape varietals and the entire winemaking processes.

Known For: Oregon wines brought to the Texas Hill Country, a French countryside gardens as one of the most picturesque settings in Fredericksburg, and an elevated tasting experience.

Our Favorite Wines: we opted out of the tasting because we fell in love with a bottle of Oregon Pinot Noir, 2018 Touriga Nacional.

Tasting Price: the regular wine tasting includes four different wines that are set by the winemaker for $18. The elevated wine tasting includes three wines and pairings for $50 (1.5-hour experience).

Dining Options: a wide selection of sandwiches, charcuterie board, pimento cheese, chicken salad, hummus, freshly baked desserts, and more from Joanna’s Market.

The Wine Garage

Do you like classic cars? Do you like wine? Then you MUST visit The Wine Garage! Hands down one of the best wineries in Fredericksburg because of its unique concept and delicious wines. Moreover, The Wine Garage is Texas’ best kept secret – their classic car collection is a true hidden gem.

Every Saturday guests get a guided tour inside the classic car collection with a progressive wine tasting. Throughout the tour, the guide provides the history and significance of each classic car, and then the guests receive a wine pairing to the car. So instead of the classic cheese and wine pairing, you receive a classic car and wine pairing. How cool is that?!!?

If you do not have the opportunity to visit on a Saturday, do not worry, you can still experience the wine tasting and classic car collection. Guests can enjoy the wine tasting in the main tasting room and then go on a guided tour of the classic car collection.

A stemless glass of red wine with a classic Rat Rod in the background from The Wine Garage - one of the best wineries in Fredericksburg.

Another fun concept from The Wine Garage is their wine labels. Each wine label represents one of the classic cars in the collection. For example, the Rat Rod Rust Bucket Red has a drawing of the Rat Rod on the front of the wine label. Then on the back of the wine label is a shifter that represents the level of dryness and sweetness of the wine – pure genius if you ask me!

A majority of the wine produced for The Wine Garage is from Texas grapes. The wine is produced off-site at Brownfield and Berner, Texas. Whereas their sister property, Fat Ass Ranch and Winery, produces sweet wines, The Wine Garage focuses on dry wines. With that said, these dry wines at The Wine Garage are some of the best because they are very smooth and easy to drink.

As you can see from our list of the best wineries in Fredericksburg, Texas – a lot of the fun happens on Saturdays. So I recommend making a plan on how to visit the wineries that you want to experience for their Saturday fun events! Sundays at every winery are definitely a lot quieter but still enjoyable.

I hope this guide of the best wineries in Fredericksburg has helped you choose which wineries you wish to visit. To be honest, you can definitely do all of these within two days – we certainly did! Just remember, please drink responsibly!
