A Weekend at the Hyatt Regency Green Bay

A Weekend at the Hyatt Regency Green Bay

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Green Bay, along with the entire family, for my cousin’s, Angela, wedding. On her side alone, there were probably at least ten rooms occupied with a total of around 20 people. It probably felt like nothing  to the hotel though because there were conferences going on and at least two more weddings that same weekend. Adam and I were looking forward to staying here because we have heard nothing, but great things about Hyatt properties. Though we are happy we stayed here, we expected more from a Hyatt hotel, let alone a Hyatt Regency hotel.

Service

Hyatt’s mission statement proclaims that, “every brand in the Hyatt portfolio is a unique interpretation of the foundational Hyatt purpose, delivering personalized care and unforgettable experiences in ways most relevant to each of the segments we serve. Because we’re only at our best when our guests are at theirs.”

Hyatt Regency Green Bay, did not live up to their standards during our visit. Bringing in at least 20 people in 10 rooms is not a big number, especially for a hotel that is attached to a conference center. Nevertheless, we informed the hotel that we were travel bloggers and work in a luxury hotel and were staying here for a wedding. We decided to inform them about our intentions of writing a post about our visit to add to our portfolio. With that said, they had advance knowledge of us and the wedding guests upon arrival to go not only match their standards, but go above and beyond them.

*Full discloser: we asked for one complimentary room or a room upgrade and room service for one morning, so that we may provide our readers with more content and really “wow” them. They informed us, that they were not able to commit to a collaboration and we completely understood – this review of their service does not reflect our communication with the hotel. We were still thrilled to stay here and experience our first Hyatt property.*

So, what went terribly wrong? Though the breakfast buffet and restaurant serve beautiful food and the rooms were lovely, Hyatt Regency falls extremely low on their service standards.

The check-in experience is your first impression of the hotel and really sets the tone of how your visit will be. Unfortunately, the check-in service by the front desk agent was mundane – she was not very inviting at all. She did not ask us why we were there and really seemed to be in a rush. Whereas, a groomsman and a fellow friend of ours, received free drink vouchers because another front desk agent asked why he was there. Turns out if you were there for the wedding, you received free drink vouchers at their bar. The front desk was both mundane and inconsistent and really did set the tone of our stay because that is what our weekend was with Hyatt Regency Green Bay, mundane and inconsistent.

We dined at the breakfast buffet every morning for three days. The first morning I wanted to create a lox bagel (smoked salmon with cream cheese, capers, tomatoes and onions on a toasted bagel). The cold item selection had the cream cheese, salmon and capers, but no sliced tomatoes. That was okay because the omelets station had some. So, I kindly asked the cook at the omelet station if I could please have some tomatoes on my plate. He looked at me like I was crazy and hesitantly placed tomatoes on my plate. As I was leaving I heard him tell a guest, “well that was a weird request”. As someone who works in this industry and stays at world class and budget friendly hotels, I know that an employee should NEVER speak to a guest about another guest, especially if they are within ear shot.

The next morning I decided to opt out of the buffet and order pancakes off the restaurant menu. I placed my order of strawberry almond pancakes to the server with my entire family at the table (they ate the breakfast buffet) and my server said the pancakes would be out shortly. Fifteen minutes go by and I am wondering how long it takes to make three pancakes, I am the only one who ordered food at the table. I ask the server how much longer for my pancakes, he tells me, “oh no I forgot to put in your order”. By the time my pancakes came out everyone had finished eating and I was not even hungry anymore because I had started eating off their plates. The server did not do any service recovery for my situation of waiting at least thirty minutes for three pancakes. In addition, he did not seem to care or feel sorry about his poor service.

On our third morning, we finally had the best server all weekend. She was bright and bubbly and very helpful. My parents decided to order off the menu and explained to our server that we were all heading out soon to catch out flight in Milwaukee, a two hour drive. She said not to worry they will have the food out quickly. Our morning was going great. I reheated my pancakes from the morning before since they were basically untouched and the server offered me fresh whip cream. It was not until twenty minutes later when my parents asked where their food was? She apologized for their wait and went to check on their food. She said it would be another fifteen to twenty minutes because the kitchen was backed up. We had to leave in twenty minutes! By the time their food came my parents had to gobble their breakfast up as fast as possible. Though the food both looked and tasted delicious they were upset. Luckily the server did a recovery and comped their breakfast.

On our the first night, some family members and us decided to grab drinks at their restaurant bar called, Pub 333 On Main. We understand that Green Bay and Wisconsin as a whole are known for their beer, but we still expect a bartender anywhere to know how to make vodka tonics and amaretto sours. Shelby, ordered her favorite drink, amaretto sour, and when it came to the table we all looked at each other like what is that? The drink had no color and Shelby said it tasted like water and had no alcohol. The rest of the table had either vodka tonics or beer and those who had vodka tonic, i.e. me, all agreed they had no alcohol either. The server was kind to try and replace Shelby’s drink with Shelby helping describe what it was missing (basically everything). When she received her second amaretto sour, it was barely any better. Needless to say, do not order cocktails at the pub, stick to the beer.

Lastly, housekeeping issues. Housekeeping started the weekend strong, but by the second day they fell weak. From the first morning buffet I had brought a yogurt to my room as a snack for later. After I consumed my yogurt, I left it by my nightstand in a rush to get to the wedding. A full day and a half went by and housekeeping still never threw it away! It was in plan sight and housekeeping had clearly come to clean our room, because towels were restocked and the bed was made, but they decided not to clean up any trash for a day and a half. Yes, I could had thrown it away myself, but after seeing housekeeping leave it for a full day, I wanted to see how much longer it took for them to throw it out. That is unacceptable for any hotel standard, let a lone a Hyatt Regency.

On the bright side, Hyatt Regency Green Bay had beautiful amenities, their food was delicious, the rooms were spacious and nice, the aesthetics of the entire hotel was lovely and it was in a great location.

Aesthetics

Though the outside of the hotel was not jaw dropping, the inside was quite lovely and welcoming. As soon as you enter the revolving doors you are greeted with brick stone arches and white columns – a very European feel. There is sconce lighting right above the crown molding before the brick stone arches form, giving a romantic atmosphere. The front desk had a more modern ambiance with their cherry wood and marble desk and purple led lighting arches along the wall.

As guests walk further into the hotel the brick stone arches open into the hotels grand foyer. What once felt small, now felt huge. There is a lot of open space with natural lighting shining into the hotel from the glass ceiling and palm trees spanned across two rows of the foyer. Hyatt Regency’s foyer really makes you feel like you are no longer in Green Bay, but a little secluded paradise. Two glass elevators on both sides of the foyer are available to guests to access their room. If you are afraid of heights just look at the floor, otherwise it is peaceful to look out into the foyer as you ascend to your level.

Rooms

The Hyatt Regency has studio, accessible/ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and residence rooms, which all have a modern style with touches of luxury and are 100% smoke free. All of the rooms come with a mini-fridge, microwave, Gilchrist & Soames® bath amenities, office desk with an ergonomic chair, a clock radio with MP3 docking station, a flat panel TV with expanded cable, a lighted make-up mirror, hair dryer, an iron & ironing board and same-day dry cleaning service. The studio rooms come with either a king bed or double queen beds. The accessible rooms are on the first floor and have accessible bathrooms as well as the ADA rooms. In addition, the compliant ADA rooms have more features such as, closed-caption television, cordless phone, standard fire alarm system with additional emergency strobe light, strobe-light smoke detector, wide doors, grab bars, raised toilet seat and more.

The residence rooms include One Bedroom Suites with a Custom Corner King, King or Double Queen. They are all more spacious than the suites with a separate living area which has a sofa bed, a granite wet bar with a mini-fridge and microwave. In addition to these residence rooms there are also a One Bedroom Executive King Suite or One Bedroom Executive Double Queen Suite that has more space in their separate living area with an U-shaped sofa and also has a separate sink and vanity in the bedroom.

We stayed in the One Bedroom King Suite and were very pleased with our room. It was as the description said online, very spacious! We felt more at home staying in this room than a regular and average hotel room. It did have a luxurious and modern style that we really appreciated. Every night when we would come back from our days worth of activities, we felt comfortable. The bed and pillows were also exceptional! It is hard to find a good bed and pillow at hotels, but we found ourselves falling straight to sleep. There was plenty of closet and drawer space for our clothes. The living area was definitely a nice touch and amenity to have. The mini-fridge and microwave were life savers since we came back to our room with leftovers more than once. The only room that we wished for more of was the bathroom. It felt slightly small compared to the rest of the hotel room, but it is far from our complaints. Our room also had a walkout patio with the view of Lambeau Field. Overall, we thought our hotel room was lovely.

Amenities and Features

The Hyatt Regency Green Bay had several wonderful amenities and features for their guests. Though we did not use them all, it was nice knowing we had the option to use them.

The Market was across from the front desk and had all the last minute necessities, as well as a small cafe eatery for those late night snacks. Being connected to a convention center means that the hotel hosts a lot of businessmen and they will be pleased to know that their business center is equipped with printer services 24/7. In addition to pleasing businessmen, Hyatt also caters to dogs, yes dog lovers, you will be able to bring your beloved with you during your stay ($100 per night) at Hyatt Regency Green Bay! For those trying to catch their flight, do not fret, Hyatt has you covered with their complimentary airport shuttle, reservations are required, but you will be safe to know you will not miss your flight.

Of course everyone loves a great pool and Hyatt Regency Green Bay certainly has a crowd pleasing indoor pool and whirl pool. They also have a sauna and steam room, which I really wished I used – though I am sure the bride and her bridesmaids did. While the girls were probably in the sauna and steam room the groom and his groomsmen might have been found pumping iron at their state of the art gym.

Our favorite feature of Hyatt Regency Green Bay is their weekend lobby games. We were told that every weekend and during busy times of the year they open a part of their foyer to some fun! They had putt putt golf, corn hole, life sized jenga and a photo booth with props for guests enjoyment. To put the cherry on top, they also served free beer for a limited time. This area was definitely one of the highlights of our stay.

Food and Beverage

The food served throughout our weekend was wonderful! We only ate at the hotel for breakfast, but everyday it was delicious! They serve a beautiful breakfast buffet daily for only twelve dollars. Some item selections include: yogurt, cereal, bagels, smoked salmon, omelets station, Wisconsin cheese, bacon, hash browns and more. In addition to the buffet, guests can also order off their breakfast menu and we do recommend you order both from the menu and eat at the buffet.

The Strawberry Almond Pancakes with almond cream cheese fluff were absolutely delicious! Another great dish we recommend is the Harvest Skillet – fried eggs with fresh vegetables and breakfast potatoes served in a warm skillet.

For lunch, dinner and drinks guests can go to Hyatt’s restaurant, Pub 333 On Main. Guests can find some classic american dishes like burgers, cobb salad, nachos, ribeye and more. After dinner the restaurant gets packed and becomes the perfect place for social hour.

Location

The location of Hyatt Regency Green Bay is perfect! It is connected to the KI Convention Center and walking distance to Titletown Brewery and Downtown Green Bay. In addition, it is fifteen minutes from the well known, Green Bay Botanical Gardens and airport. Of course, we cannot go without saying it is only ten minutes away from the famous, Lambeau Field! Needless to say, it is a prime location for weddings, a getaway weekend and those Packer home games.

Overall

Overall we try to overlook Hyatt Regency Green Bay’s poor service and remember their fine amenities. If you are looking for a place to stay with a great location, dining options and spacious rooms, then we highly recommend Hyatt Regency Green Bay.

The Hyatt Regency Green Bay does look like a good place to stay. With the price for a room the service should be consistent though. The buffet looks delicious, the place looks stunning and the weekend games sound fun too!

We completely agree, and fortunately paid a discounted rate because of the wedding. Otherwise, we would have been extremely mad. The food at the buffet and restaurant were fantastic and one of the best features of the hotel. The lobby games were the other best thing :)

It's disappointing to have high expectations because of a normally positive hotel chain reputation only to be shocked by horrible service! I'm sorry this happened to you. That is frustrating about the drinks - especially when you pay a pretty penny for them! I guess you should have asked for something less peculiar than tomatoes... like oh wait, that isn't peculiar! ;) I'm glad the rest of your experience in Wisconsin made up for it!

Yes, we learned our lesson, when in Wisconsin, drink beer! Luckily the hotel room and amenities were very beautiful. We really want to like Hyatt, but it will probably be awhile before we stay with a Hyatt property again.

Wow such a disappointment that the service is not up to standard. Seriously, what's wrong with asking tomatoes? He's weird to say it's a weird request. I'm glad it's a still a beautiful hotel and convenient. The Wisconsin cheese looks delicious and speaking of which, I miss it (used to live in WI). The cheese board is so cute!

Haha right?!!? Thank you, glad I am not the only one. And yes, I thought the Wisconsin board serving Wisconsin cheese was a very nice touch. That is awesome, I love cheese and might move to WI just for the cheese! :)

Such a beautiful hotel, but sad to hear that the service didn't meet the standards. It is always such a disappointment to experience that since all we customers deserve better than that. I think that the good service should be the goal in every hotel, and the amenities are what we pay for.

As a paying customer in any industry I agree that we are always expecting good customer service. For example, a restaurant you pay for the food, but expect good service with the food you pay for. Totally understand and agree with your comment!
