How to Have a Girls Weekend in Fredericksburg, Texas

How to Have a Girls Weekend in Fredericksburg, Texas

Who is ready to plan an epic girls weekend in Fredericksburg, Texas?!?!

Ladies, we all have that core group of girlfriends who we forget to text or call to catch up every month, but once you are together it is like you just saw everyone yesterday. Am I right? My best girlfriends and I have been close since our freshman year at Texas A&M University. We were roommates, classmates, and soccer teammates throughout college. Those four years locked in a lifetime of friendship. So, when we needed to have a girls weekend, we knew just the place – Fredericksburg, Texas, the wine country of Texas!

Fredericksburg, Texas is the perfect city to have a girls weekend because there are delicious wineries, affordable rental homes, good food, and great entertainment. Combine that with the best company of girls and you have yourself the perfect girls weekend in Fredericksburg, Texas.

My guide to having the best girls weekend in Fredericksburg, Texas covers everything you need to know. Starting with the road trip to get there, renting a house for the weekend, where to eat, wine hopping, wine tips, and more.

Road Trip to Fredericksburg, Texas

Whether you are coming from Dallas, Houston, or San Antonio, the best start to a girls weekend in Fredericksburg, Texas begins with a road trip! If you are unfamiliar with road trips in Texas, don’t worry. The only thing you need to know is the famous gas stop, Buc-ee’s! Buc-ee’s is not only a gas station, but it is also a large convenient store known for its iconic mascot, Buc-ee the beaver!

Inside you will find a large selection of candy, beef jerky, homemade fudge, pastries, fresh sandwiches, bbq, Dippin’ Dots and my favorite, Beaver Nuggets. Not only are they my favorite, but these caramel, butter-glazed corn puff nuggets are also Buc-ee’s number one selling product.

In addition to their nuggets, beef jerky and gas, Buc-ee’s is also known for their clean bathrooms. In fact, it has been awarded “Best Restroom in America” by Cintas. Needless to say, this needs to be your first stop on your girls weekend to Fredericksburg, Texas.

Rent a House for the Weekend in Fredericksburg, Texas

Renting a house for a girls weekend in Fredericksburg, Texas is truly the best option. The rental houses are affordable, have plenty of space, come fully furnished, and are quite charming. Between the six of my girlfriends, we rented a three bedroom, two-bath, house and I cannot stress enough how this is definitely the way to go. When you rent a house for the weekend, you do not have to worry about anything. Our house had a nice sized kitchen with cooking utensils, pots, pans, baking sheets, silverware, plates, bowls and of course a lot of wine glasses. Everything about our rental house was perfect. It was even walking distance to a nice grocery store, HEB, as well as Main Street. The cherry on top – it was also very budget friendly, we only had to pay $90 each for two nights, a total of $540.

We loved renting a house because of the space and flexibility it provided us. We were able to always come “home” and sit around the kitchen table laughing and reminiscing about our college days, bachelorette parties, and weddings. Of course, you are never too old for drinking and board games, so being able to stay up late and not worry about our volume of laughter is also another reason why renting a house is perfect for a girls weekend.

Where to Eat in Fredericksburg, Texas

I first recommend going to the beloved HEB grocery store and picking up a few groceries for the weekend. Going to the grocery store to buy breakfast is the way to go for a girls weekend in Fredericksburg because it is easy, convenient and budget-friendly. Plus, we all know that it takes us women a while to get up and ready. So having breakfast at our house allowed us to take our time. It also took us back to the good times when I would make everyone breakfast tacos before our morning classes back in college. Only this time we were drinking bottomless mimosas!

Seven different bottles of wine to enjoy for a girls weekend in Fredericksburg, Texas.

For lunch, I recommend Woerner Warehouse, a cute and casual Italian restaurant located within the iconic Woerner Feed Storeplace. They are known for its housemade pizzas and calzones (they are seriously amazing), but the menu also includes soup, salad, and sandwiches. They also offer a great breakfast and freshly baked desserts. With that said, if you are wine hopping during the afternoon, I recommend enjoying something light or snacking throughout the afternoon at different wineries. Some wineries like Fiesta Winery will offer appetizers to go along with your wine tastings – there is nothing better than hummus, fruit, nuts, cheese, and charcuterie with glasses of wine.

Dinner is the perfect time to eat on Main Street because the atmosphere is always entertaining and full of life. One restaurant I highly recommend for a great night out is at a German restaurant called The Auslander. Though Fredericksburg is the wine country of Texas, it also has a lot of German history and heritage, so The Auslander is truly the perfect restaurant for dinner. It not only has several dining areas inside but also an outdoor seating area with live music. Furthermore, it has good food and beer! The entire night felt like I was reliving Oktoberfest in Munich all over again. You truly cannot go wrong with anything on the menu, but the traditional schnitzel platters are quite delicious.

Walking and Shopping on Main Street

Main Street is a very cute street that really makes you feel like you are in a German town that somehow ended up in the middle of Texas. There are brick roads and sidewalks with several charming boutique clothing stores, restaurants, art galleries, wine cellars, and more. At night, Main Street has such a great vibe because almost every restaurant has live music either at the front door performing or inside.

Of course, a girls weekend in Fredericksburg is not complete without some shopping, so hit the clothing boutiques where you can find a lot of rhinestone outfits, jean jackets, cowboy hats, and boots. It also feels a little like Las Vegas because you can drink on the sidewalks. So you can either shop till you drop or casually walk down Main Street with wine in your hands.

Wine Hopping in Fredericksburg, Texas

A guide to Fredericksburg, Texas for a girls weekend is not complete without the most popular attraction – the wineries! Most of the wineries, vineyards, and wine tasting rooms are all in close proximity, so you can wine hop easily. We certainly did! Just remember to always drink responsibly. If you do not have a designated driver, you can always use a wine shuttle.

Barons Creek Vineyard

The first winery I recommend visiting during your girls weekend in Fredericksburg, Texas is Barons Creek Vineyard. The beautiful, European-style white buildings with tiled rooftops will instantly catch your eye, they look like they belong in the Napa Valley.

Beautiful rectangle pool with a little fountain and an European villa and covered patio from Barons Creek Vineyard in Fredericksburg, Texas.

Baron Creek Vineyards gas a fantastic seven glass tasting in their main tasting room for $18. They have a great list of wines and their bartenders are very helpful to guide you through the tasting. If you enjoy any of the glasses as we did, then you can purchase a bottle and enjoy it on their patio. Their patio is beautiful with a large field of grass, a water fountain, and a covered seating area with a live band perfoming. Guests can even stay in the villas on property for the ultimate winery experience in Fredericksburg. Needless to say, for those wanting an elegant escape, I highly recommend Barons Creek Vineyards.

Fiesta Winery

The second winery I highly recommend and my favorite is Fiesta Winery. Fiesta Winery, as the name suggests, has a very fun and more casual atmosphere. The entire estate with the outdoor seating area has a rustic and country-esque atmosphere. The winery is surrounded by trees that provided a sufficient amount of shade to the seating areas – perfect for the hot summer days. There are also lights strung across the seating area that I can only imagine is very beautiful at night. To top it off they also have live performances to truly bring the entire place to life.

A beautiful outdoor seating area with trees providing shade at Fiesta Winery.

Fiesta Winery is known for its large variety of sweet wines. They have two tasting rooms. The main tasting room is for flights while the smaller room is used to taste wines to purchase by the glass or bottle. We chose to taste in the smaller room and were able to try as many wines as we wanted. Every wine we tasted was delicious and slightly sweet, but the clear favorite was Skinny Dippin’. This white wine not only has the cutest label and name,  but also the best wine we tried the entire day! If you enjoy white wine, you HAVE to try Skinny Dippin’.

As stated previously, Fiesta Winery is a great place to enjoy a light lunch with wine. They have a lovely cheese and charcuterie board with dried fruit, nuts, and olives as well as a generous hummus board. So this winery is truly the perfect place to enjoy an afternoon during your weekend in Fredericksburg, Texas. We sure did! We enjoyed our amazing afternoon on Fiesta Winery’s patio with Skinny Dippin’ wine, great food, and friends. What more could you ask for?

Dan Pfeiffer Art Gallery and Wine

In addition to the wineries and vineyards, you can also enjoy some great wine tasting on Main Street. One wine tasting room I recommend is Dan Pfeiffer Art Gallery and Wine. As the name states, this establishment is both an art gallery and tasting room. They not only have Texas wines but also have several different wines from around the world. Similar to Fiesta Winery, you can taste as many wines as you please to find the perfect one to purchase a glass or bottle. Note that you are not paying for a tasting, but a glass of wine. Once you find your favorite bottle of wine, you can purchase a glass and enjoy it outside on their small patio.

Texas Wine Cellars

One of the most unique places you need to visit during your girls weekend in Fredericksburg, Texas is Texas Wine Cellars. Exchange wine for beer and amazing frozen peach-raspberry bellinis. I cannot recommend the frozen bellinis enough, they were seriously the best thing we had the entire day. The bellinis not only look good, but they also taste AMAZING! It is also the perfect drink to enjoy down Main Street during those hot, sunny days. Furthermore, Texas Wine Cellars also has so many cute Texas home decor, clothing and alcohol knick-knacks for purchase. So you may come out with shopping bags and bottles of wine.

Wine Tips

If you are unfamiliar with how wine tastings work, here are a few wine tips to go by:

  • Start from light wines to dry red and then finish with sweet.
  • Tipping – If you are doing a wine tasting and buy a bottle it is said that you do not need to tip. If you do not buy a bottle it is not necessary to tip,  it if they did a good job it is respectful to tip.
  • Drink water between wine tasting. Bring a cooler and pack water bottles.
  • Make sure you eat or snack a little or you will not last long.
  • Stock up. Buy a lot of Texas wine at the grocery store to drink around the table late at night.

We did Fredericksburg as part of my now sister-in-law's bachelorette party and had a great time spending the day in such a cute city! We also spent a day at the Lakeway Resort and Spa and an evening in Downtown ATX. What I wish we had time for was a boat rental on Lake Austin. It's definitely something that has become very popular to do as part of any girls' weekend getaway. I would recommend Wake Riderz for a really nice, captained pontoon to cruise the Lake and hang out at the Party Cove. Thank you for sharing the pics of your weekend in Fredericksburg. Glad you enjoyed your time!
